1 [I, T] to make somebody/something die किसी को मारना, किसी का मारा जाना

Smoking kills.

NOTE Murder का अर्थ है किसी विशेष कारण से किसी व्‍यक्ति को मारना

—This was no accident. The old lady was murdered.

Assassinate का अर्थ है राजनीतिक कारणों से किसी की हत्‍या करना

—Gandhiji was assassinated.

Slaughter और massacre का अर्थ है बड़ी संख्‍या में लोगों को मारना

—Hundreds of people were massacred when the army opened fire on the crowd.

खाने के लिए पशु को मारने के अर्थ में भी slaughter का प्रयोग किया जाता है।

2 [T] ( informal ) to cause somebody pain; to hurt किसी को तकलीफ़ पहुँचाना; पीड़ा देना, दर्द देना, चोट पहुँचाना

My feet are killing me.

3 [T] to cause something to end or fail किसी वस्‍तु को नष्‍ट या विफल करवाना

The minister’s opposition killed the idea stone dead.

4 [T] ( spoken ) to be very angry with somebody किसी व्‍यक्ति पर बहुत क्रुद्घ होना

My mum will kill me when she sees this mess.

5 [T] ( informal ) kill yourself/somebody to make yourself/somebody laugh a lot स्‍वयं को या किसी और को ख़ूब हँसाना

We were killing ourselves laughing.
