2 used especially after ‘can’ and ‘could’ and before the main verb to emphasize that something is difficult to do किसी काम में होने वाली कठिनाई पर बल देने के लिए विशेषतः ‘can’ और ‘could’ के बाद और मुख्‍य क्रिया से पहले प्रयुक्त

Speak up—I can hardly hear you.

3 (used to say that something has just begun, happened, etc.) only just कुछ अभी शुरू हुआ है या घटित हुआ है यह कहने के लिए प्रयुक्त, अभी-अभी

She’d hardly gone to sleep than it was time to get up again.

NOTE यदि 'hardly' वाक्‍य के शुरू में आए तो तुरंत बाद में क्रिया आती है, औपचारिक लेखन में ऐसा प्रयोग पाया जाता है

—Hardly had she gone to sleep than it was time to get up again.

4 (used to suggest that something is unlikely or unreasonable) not really (यह बताने के लिए प्रयुक्त कि कोई बात न तो संभावित है न तर्कयुक्त), बिलकुल नहीं

You can hardly expect me to believe that excuse!
